Welcome
Tutorial For a Typical Experiment in Psychological Research: Special Project
Note: By opening this tutorial through the link at the top left of the ProtoGenie homepage for students of Dr. LaFontana, you should now have two browser windows open, the ProtoGenie homepage and this tutorial page. Both will be kept open and used subsequently in this tutorial to demonstrate the construction of the protocol (script) for this example study.
This tutorial for classroom support was created as part of a special collaborative project with Dr. Kathryn LaFontana, Chairperson of the Psychology Department, Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT and Pasadero, Inc., makers of ProtoGenie. Please feel free to ask questions and to comment on this tutorial and special project.
Important Information for New Users
The typical experiment in psychological research used in this tutorial presents two photographs as visual stimuli, but essentially the same procedures can be used with any standard images (e.g., JPEG and GIFF), whether they contain pictures, graphics, or text. For example, you might present geometrical figures containing optical illusions or you might present letters in different fonts, styles, and colors. Therefore, this tutorial can be used for guidance on a wide range of experiments and you can use the protocol that goes with this tutorial as a TEMPLATE for those studies.
All operations in the above are menu-driven. That is, no custom coding is required. If the visual stimuli displayed on the screen are created by the computer or if the objects on the screen actually change while viewing them, then you will use more advanced methods, generally involving the customizing of other protocols used as templates or some custom coding, as in writing Applets.
At this point, you will have opened ProtoGenie to the homepage and clicked on the link at the top of the first column labeled "Dr. LaFontana's students click here."
