Pre-Experiment Preparation

Before getting into an actual experiment based on this experimental design and tutorial, you will need to do the following:

1.  Before beginning to design your experiment, you will need to post any pictures or other stimulus materials that you wish to use to a server, either at your own institution or one that is publicly available.  Usually, you will need one picture or other stimulus for each condition of your experiment.  For this tutorial, you will be creating an experiment to determine the effects of physical attractiveness and verbal descriptions of a person on participants' judgments about that person.  You will need a picture of a person that has been prejudged to be attractive and a picture of a person of the same sex that has been prejudged to be unattractive.  For this tutorial, you can use the two photos provided Dr. LaFontana and made available on the ProtoGenie server.

2.  You will need a list of available students from which to randomly select participants for this experiment.  If you wish to include any subject variables, for example, the gender of the participants, you will need to make sure that half of your participants are  female and half are male.  You may be using a program such as Experimetrix which will recruit participants and allow them to participate in the experiment on-line.  Consult with your instructor to learn more about how participants will be contacted.
